Community service is at the core of what we as Lions do.  The Lions motto of "We Serve" plays a vital role in each of our members daily lives and is the foundation for everything we do to serve our fellow man.  Being involved in your community and giving back is extremely important, especially in small towns like Braidwood.  But, something even more important is getting our local youth involved in community service from a young age.  Doing so helps build character & social skills, teaches the importance of being a good neighbor and emphasizes the impact that can be made by helping others in their time of need.

Several years ago, the Reed Custer High School implemented a requirement for students to perform a certain number of community service hours throughout their high school career in order to qualify for graduation.  This requirement has helped to place an emphasis on student involvement in our community and our club has benefited greatly over the years from the volunteer assistance received from students during our various community events, activities and fundraisers.

When it comes to community service, there is always the element of going above and beyond what is expected to make the ultimate impact.  We greatly appreciate and acknowledge the students who have gone above and beyond the minimum community service requirements and have made a critical impact on our community and the lives of others.

As a way for us to recognize those graduating Seniors from Reed Custer High School who have gone well above and beyond the minimum community service requirements, we are pleased to announce that we are starting a new community service award program.

Starting with the graduating class of 2026, the Wayne T. Saltzman Community Service Awards will be presented on a tiered scale to the top three graduating Seniors from Reed Custer High School who have completed the most community service hours over the course of their high school career.

- Award Levels -

1st: $1,000.00

2nd: $750.00

3rd: $500.00

Requirements:

- Students must have recorded their community service hours with the RCHS Guidance department in accordance with already established guidelines.

- Recipients must be planning to further their education (college, trade school, online courses, etc.).

The awards are being presented in memory of Lion Wayne Saltzman who passed away this past December.  Community service and involvement was extremely important to Lions Wayne and his appreciation for those making an impact on our community will live on well into the future.
